Sculptures of World War I
Go for a wander along the promenade and admire some interesting sculptures commemorating World War I. A local sculptor used tree stumps and carved images of Australia at war. The display showcases history with a difference and features famous scenes of Simpson and his donkey.
The Griffiths' Sea Shell Museum
The Sea Shell Museum features fantastic displays of shells, corals and even the head of the biggest marlin ever caught. Your eyes will marvel at the wealthy collection of shells and unusual corals. In a large aquarium watch sea snakes, blue-ringed octopi and many unusual marine creatures. Purchase some souvenirs at the gift shop and admire the large model railway.
Wyanga Park Vineyards and Winery
Wine lovers may wish to visit the tasting room of Wyanga Park Vineyards and Winery. Established in 1970, it's the oldest commercial vineyard in Gippsland. Children are also catered for as the winery has a playground, picnic and barbecue areas, pet pigs and a bird aviary.
Nyerimilang Homestead and Nyerimilang Park
The Homestead and Park boasts attractive ornamental gardens of native and exotic species, pastoral surrounds and pleasant views of Reeves Channel and the lakes. The homestead was used as a base for fishing and shooting expeditions in the late 19th-century, training farm for boys in the mid 20th-century and a holiday home from the 1940s to 1960s.
Fishing Around Lakes Entrance
Angling contests held at Seaspray, Bairnsdale and Sale each year are proof of the huge fishing popularity of the area. Surf fishing is common on Ninety Mile Beach, while fishing off the jetties at Lakes Entrance is greatly rewarding.
Jemmy Point Lookout
For excellent views of the lakes and Bass Strait go to the overhanging bluff at Jemmy Point, 2km west of town on the Princes Highway. According to Aboriginal legends, Nyols, small people reminiscent of the fairies of western folklore, lived here.
Gippsland Lakes Inland Waterways
The Gippsland Lakes system is the biggest and most beautiful expanse of inland waterways in the southern hemisphere. The area boasts stunning views and visitors will be fascinated by the intricate intertwining lakes, channels and bays.
Exploring National Parks
With eight magnificent National Parks on the coast and in the high country to choose from - there's sure to be something to please every nature lover. The Alpine National Park (Victoria's biggest), the Snowy River National Park and the UNESCO- listed Croajingalong National Park are top of the list.
Nature Walks
The Lakes Entrance area is home to numerous nature walk options from beach-side stolls to vigorous mountain hikes. For more detailed information head to the information centre, located on the corner of Marine Parade and the Princes Highway. It's a good starting point for an investigation of the town and the general area.
Cunninghame Arm Footbridge
For some truly scenic view of the Lakes Entrance coastline take a walk across the footbridge.T he bridge crosses the still waters of Cunninghame Arm and links the town centre with the sand dunes and windswept coastline of Bass Strait. A return walk from the footbridge along the narrow peninsula of land is about five kilometres.
Kinkuna Country Fun and Fauna Park
Located on the Princes Highway, this fun park has a wildlife park (including monkeys and hand-fed lions), a toboggan ride, two large waterslides, a toddlers' pool, mini-golf, a playground, a jumping castle, a cafeteria, licensed bar and souvenir shop. Something for everyone!
